What Can Clog a Drain at Home?

Plumbing

A Clogged Drain is a Common Plumbing Problem

Imagine this: You’re in the middle of washing your hands after a day of tending to the garden. Upon turning off the faucet, you notice that water begins to drain very slowly. While there may be nothing wrong with your plumbing at first glance, the root of the problem may be stemming from a clogged drain.

To prevent this from happening in the future, you need to know what can cause the problem in the first place:

Things That Can Cause a Clogged Drain at Home

Using it as a Garbage Can

Whether you have loose debris in your pocket or you’ve just finished cooking dinner and need a spot to dispose of the leftovers, your drain is not a garbage can. Even if you have a garbage disposal installed, there are certain items you should not toss down to not only prevent a clog but to avoid breaking the blades.

You should avoid tossing these contenders down the drain at all costs:

  • Produce stickers

  • Animal bones

  • Coffee grounds

  • Small pieces of paper

These items wreak havoc on your sink drain and can cause a pretty severe clog over time — this can only lead to a plumbing problem and potential headache in the future.

Pouring Cooking “Leftovers” Down the Drain

When you’re done cooking your dinner in a pan, where do you typically dispose of the byproduct or “leftover” grease/oil? If it’s down the nearest drain in your home, that’s a no-go. The hot grease/oil will harden when it comes in contact with a cold drain pipe, and it can narrow the passage for water to escape (over time), creating a recipe for a plumbing nightmare.

To prevent this from happening, consider taking an old container and carefully pouring the hot liquid into it. Once it has dried and hardened, toss the canister into a nearby garbage can.
