As the most-used appliance in family homes today, a toilet is seldom given a second thought until it is clogged or just stops working. Toilets that don't stop running can waste hundreds of gallons of water each year, racking up water bills in the process. What's more, problems can occurr without homeowoner knowledge, such as a silent leak.
The
top 3 reasons toilets leak are due to parts that are more than five years old; prolonged exposure to bleach products inside the tank; or rusted or warped parts. To avoid future hassles, look for these and other common problems to be proactive, rather than reactive.
Other Common Signs of a Leaking Toilet
- Slow-draining bowls
- Overflowing or leaking bowls
- Loose seats
- Tank leaks
- Non-stop water running
Toilet Repair & Installation
When it becomes time to replace a leaking toilet, or you simply want to replace a toilet to enhance your bathroom's aesthetics, here are a few things to consider:
Bowl Size and Shape
- Round: These bowls are more compact to fit into smaller spaces and generally cost less than elongated bowls.
- Elongated: These bowls are more comfortable for adults and are visually appealing.
Number of Pieces

- A one-piece toilet comes in six to 10 individual pieces sculpted into a seamless, space-saving unit with no crevices between the tank and bowl to collect dirt and odors.
- The two-piece toilet is a traditional design of a separate tank and bowl, but is bolted together when installed.
Flushing Systems
Both types of flushing systems outlined below save water by using 1.6 gallons of water/flush.
- Most commonly used, gravity-fed toilets do just that, and utilize the force of gravity and a siphon "pull-through" action to empty the bowl. This type of flushing systems is quieter than the pressure-assisted flushing toilets.
- Pressure-assisted flushing is needed if a gravity-fed toilet has trouble with long sewer runs or needs to be flushed more than twice to clear the bowl.
Toilet Height
- Most toilets range from 14 inches to 16 inches high (floor to seat), but some of the new contemporary designs are even lower.
- The ADA height requirement for toilets is between 16.5 and 18 inches. A higher toilet is helpful for the disabled in terms of safety and comfort.
